Young Salmon

Embryos develop as the eggs incubate. Once the eggs hatch and the young are still hiding in the gravel and being fed by their yolk sacs, they are called alevins. If there is a great deal of fine sediment in the water that settles into the spaces between the gravel, both eggs and alevins can be smothered.
