Leaving The Nest
As the young salmon are "buttoned up" (that is, as the egg sac is consumed) and emerge from the gravel, some species such as chum or pinks will immediately begin traveling downstream to the ocean, while others, such as coho or some chinook, will rear and grow towards adulthood in their natal streams or adjacent wetlands for up to a year. Streamside vegetation, in-channel cover provided by logs and boulders, and good water quality is particularly important for species that rear in fresh water.
